SILASTIC\u2122 RTV-3481 Mould-Making Base is suited for the detailed reproduction of
\nfigures, art objects and similar items.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nDescription<\/h3>\n
SILASTIC\u2122 RTV-3481 Mould-Making Rubber is a two-component material consisting of
\nSILASTIC RTV-3481 Base which when mixed with a SILASTIC\u2122 RTV-3081 Mould-Making
\nCuring Agent, cures at room temperature by a condensation reaction. A range of materials
\ncan be cast into the cured silicone mold: plaster, polyurethane and polyester resins are
\nmaterials typically used.<\/p>\n
How To Use<\/h3>\n
Substrate Preparation<\/strong>
\nThe surface of the original should be clean and free of loose material. If necessary, and in
\nparticular with porous substrates, use a suitable release agent such as petroleum jelly or
\nsoap solution.<\/p>\nMixing<\/strong>
\nThoroughly stir SILASTIC RTV-3481 Base before use, as filler separation may occur upon
\nprolonged storage. Weigh 100 parts of SILASTIC RTV-3481 Base and 5 parts of SILASTIC
\nRTV-3081 Curing Agent in a clean container. Mix together until the curing agent is
\ncompletely dispersed in the base. Hand or mechanical mixing can be used, but do not mix
\nfor an extended period of time or allow the temperature to exceed 35\u00b0C (95\u00b0F). Mix suitably
\nsmall quantities to ensure thorough mixing of base and curing agent. It is strongly
\nrecommended that entrapped air be removed in a vacuum chamber, allowing the mix to
\ncompletely expand and then collapse. After a further 1\u20132 minutes under vacuum, the mix
\nshould be inspected and can be used if free of air bubbles. A volume increase of 3\u20135 times
\nwill occur on vacuum de-airing the mixture, so a suitably large container should be chosen.<\/p>\nCaution: prolonged vacuum will remove volatile components from the mix and may result in
\npoor thick section cure and non-typical properties.<\/p>\n
Note: If no vacuum de-airing equipment is available, air entrapment can be minimized by
\nmixing a small quantity of SILASTIC RTV-3481 Base and SILASTIC RTV-3081 Curing
\nAgent, then using a brush, painting the original with a 1\u20132 mm layer. Leave at room
\ntemperature until the surface is bubble free and the layer has begun to cure. Mix a further
\nquantity of base and curing agent and proceed as follows to produce a final mold.<\/p>\n
Pouring The Mixture And Curing<\/strong>
\nPour the mixed SILASTIC RTV-3481 Base and SILASTIC RTV-3081 Curing Agent as soon
\nas possible onto the original, avoiding air entrapment. The catalyzed material will cure to a
\nflexible rubber within 24 hours (or faster when SILASTIC RTV-3081 Curing Agent or
\nSILASTIC\u2122 RTV-3081-VF Mould-Making Curing Agent are used) at room temperature (22\u2013
\n24\u00b0C\/ 71.6\u201375.2\u00b0F) and the mold can then be separated from the material. If the working
\ntemperature is significantly lower, the cure time will be longer. If the room temperature or
\nhumidity is very high, the working time of the catalyzed mixture will be reduced. The final
\nmechanical properties of the mold will be reached within 7 days.<\/p>\nAdditional Information (Cont.)<\/h3>\n
Reproduction of vertical surfaces if a skin mold is required of a vertical object or surface and
\ncannot be made by normal pouring techniques, the catalyzed mixture can be made
\nnonflowable by the addition of XIAMETER\u2122 RTV-3011 Thixo Additive.<\/p>\n
1. Prepare the original as described earlier.
\n2. Brush the original with a thin layer of catalyzed mixture. Repeat the operation when the
\nfirst layer has started to cure, to achieve a coating thickness of > 2 mm. Leave to cure
\nat room temperature until the material is tacky.
\n3. Prepare a new catalyzed mixture of SILASTIC RTV-3481 Base and add 3% by weight
\nof XIAMETER RTV-3011 Thixo Additive and mix thoroughly until a paste consistency is
\nreached. De-airing of the mixture is not required.
\n4. Using a spatula, cover the coated original with the thixotropic coating until all undercuts
\nare filled; leave to cure for 24 hours, or less if SILASTIC RTV-3081 Curing Agent or
\nSILASTIC RTV-3081-VF Curing Agent are used, at room temperature.
\n5. Construct a support mold using polyester resin or plaster and allow to set in contact
\nwith the silicone coating. Carefully remove the support mold. Peel the rubber off the
\noriginal and place in the support mould.<\/p>\n
Other Curing Agents<\/strong>
\nThe standard curing agent for SILASTIC RTV-3481 Base is SILASTIC RTV-3081 Curing
\nAgent. For special requirements we offer a range of additional curing agents.<\/p>\n\n- SILASTIC RTV-3081 Curing Agent for demolding after 6 hours.<\/li>\n
- SILASTIC RTV-3081-VF Curing Agent for demolding after 2 hours.<\/li>\n
- SILASTIC\u2122 RTV-3081-R Mould-Making Curing Agent for improved mold life with
\npolyester casting resins.<\/li>\n - SILASTIC\u2122 RTV-3081-F Mould-Making Curing Agent and SILASTIC RTV-3081-VF
\nCuring Agent are fast curing agents and give a shorter working time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\nUse At High Temperatures<\/strong>
\nSome molds produced from condensation cure silicone rubbers can degrade when exposed
\nto temperatures above 150\u00b0C (302\u00b0F) over a period of time or when totally confined in
\nstorage at high ambient temperatures. This can result in softening and loss of elastic
\nproperties.<\/p>\nPlease contact a distributor for further advice.<\/p>\n
Resistance To Casting Materials<\/strong>
\nThe chemical resistance of fully cured SILASTIC RTV-3481 Base is excellent, and similar to
\nall condensation cure silicone elastomers. It should be noted however that ultimately, resins
\nand other aggressive casting materials will attack silicone molds, changing physical
\nproperties, surface release and possibly mold dimensions. Molds should be checked
\nperiodically during long production runs.<\/p>\nNote: SILASTIC RTV-3481 Base is an industrial product and must not be used in food
\nmolding, dental and human skin molding applications.<\/p>\n
